Boise, ID
The John L. Scott Foundation and the Boise John L. Scott Real Estate Offices, in conjunction with the IDEA League, raised $90,000 during their sponsorship of the first annual “A Day for Dravet Walk.” Dravet (Dra-vay) syndrome, also known as Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy (SMEI), is a rare and challenging neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by frequent, severe, and difficult-to-control seizures that begin in the first year of life. It is usually accompanied by varying degrees of developmental delay and/or regression of acquired skills. Orthopedic issues, behavior problems and other symptoms are also common. Children with Dravet syndrome do not outgrow their seizures. There is currently no cure for Dravet syndrome and there are few effective treatments. The IDEA League is an international non-profit organization that promotes awareness of and research for Dravet syndrome and related forms of epilepsy and provides resources and support to improve the quality of life for affected individuals and families. The event is an opportunity for communities across the US to rally together in support of children struggling with Dravet syndrome and related forms of epilepsy and to increase awareness of these conditions within the community. The event will also raise much-needed funds to support the mission of the IDEA League and to improve the outcomes for these precious children. Improving the Outcome for individuals affected by Dravet syndrome and supporting us in our efforts to find a cure is a rewarding experience and is really very simple. To join in the walk, please register online at www.adayfordravet.kintera.org .

The Pediatric Rehabilitation Program at Harrison Medical Center serves children, from birth to 18 years of age, who have physical and/or learning disabilities due to illness, injury or congenital causes. The program is designed to help children with a disability or loss of function in one or more of the following areas: physical skills, daily living activities, communication, social interaction, and/or cognition. Using equipment and facilities that are only available at Harrison, our team of therapists provide a level of care unequalled in the Puget Sound region. In the rehabilitation program, their goal is not merely to improve the functional ability of the children they treat, but to guide them back as close as possible to where he or she needs to be at this stage of life—learning, playing, and just being a kid. They recognize the unique needs of pediatric patients and their families. A child, however strong and independent, is first and foremost a valued member of their family and this community. At Harrison, parents, siblings and other loved ones play a crucial role in a child’s rehabilitation program. Through their family-centered program, they provide emotional, psychological and behavioral solutions for families. In addition to working alongside parents, they offer education, counseling and healing activities for brothers and sisters, who themselves are often deeply affected by their sibling’s condition. Last year Harrison pediatric rehabilitation treated over 200 children from Kitsap County, saving them from having to travel to Seattle or Tacoma by providing the most advanced therapy right here, close to home.

Play Park Phase II-Summer 2007
Seattle, WA
The John L. Scott Foundation is ramping up for the second phase of Children's Hospital Play Park. The new play area will be located in the Psychiatric Unit of the hospital. Children’s Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU) is committed to the treatment of children with emotional, behavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders. Patients range in ages from 4-18 and the challenge is keeping kids active while they are experiencing very tough times emotionally. At times treatment requires not leaving our unit during a patient’s stay. Not being able to leave the unit is difficult for patients and for the caregivers. Having an inviting outdoor space will be beneficial by not only encouraging patients to go outside and get fresh air to enhance their health but also get much needed exercise that helps them get better. Outdoor space also provides a place for patients to practice coping skills that may include running or walking while upset, enhancing the care they receive by being able to utilize coping skills to under the supervision of a caregiver. A new outdoor play area will provide Children’s staff the security of knowing their patients are safe outside while giving the kids the opportunity to get outdoors as they recover.

John L. Scott Playyard Project-August 30, 2006
Seattle, WA
8/30/06-The John L. Scott Foundation hosted the Grand Opening Ceremony for the 2006 Playyard Project and donated $130,000. The premise of the play yard was originally designed with the idea that the John L. Scott Foundation might be able to develop a “home away from home”. Once work began on the concept, it was decided that reminding them that they weren’t at home was not the direction we wanted to go. Many of the kids the hospital caters to are unable to play on traditional playground equipment. So after months of planning and analyzing the many safety and health concerns together, the idea of sending them on "vacation" began. The entire play yard has been themed to reflect a beach scene, complete with a life size sandcastle, painted water moat, faux sandy beach, sea monster, boats, tricycles, life size fish, maze panels, protective tot surfacing, bubble cart, water features, new basketball court, park benches and grassy areas to play.
